Spirituality at Christ Church
At Christ Church, spirituality is about nurturing the whole child and discovering the fullness of life that God promises. Underpinned by Jesus’ words in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full,” our definition of spirituality aligns directly with our vision of enabling every child to do their best in school and grow into who they were created to be.
We believe that spirituality fundamentally concerns a person's relationship:
- With themselves: Encouraging self-reflection, personal growth, and emotional well-being, while fostering a sense of inner peace.
- With others: Promoting empathy, compassion, and respect within our diverse community, nurturing supportive relationships and a sense of belonging.
- With God (or the transcendent/Beyond): Embracing the Christian faith as the foundation for spiritual development, cultivating a meaningful connection with God through prayer, worship, and theological exploration.
How We Experience Spirituality: Windows, Mirrors, and Doors
We explore and develop spirituality across school life using the Windows, Mirrors, and Doors framework:
- Windows (Looking Out): Providing opportunities for children to look out into the world with awe, wonder, and curiosity. In our classroom curriculum, children encounter both the 'wow' moments of fascination and beauty and the 'ow' moments that provoke deep questions about the world.
- Mirrors (Looking In): Giving children time and space to reflect on their own feelings, thoughts, and beliefs. Through daily prayers, collective worship, and peaceful moments using the Spacemakers programme, pupils are given opportunities to reflect, ask big questions, and cultivate inner peace.
- Doors (Looking Ahead): Guiding children to turn their inner reflections into positive, creative choices and actions. Our spirituality encourages us to put our beliefs into action every day.
Living Our Values and Spirituality in Our Community
Spirituality is not confined to specific lessons; it is the woven fabric of our entire school environment. Our spiritual growth is expressed and lived out through our core school values:
- Love and Kindness: Expressed through the empathy, care, and respect our pupils show to one another on the playground and across our diverse community.
- Peace and Faithfulness: Nurtured through reflective worship, prayer, and deep, supportive relationships with God and each other.
- Perseverance and Joy: Experienced in the classroom as children embrace new challenges with curiosity, resilience, and enthusiasm for the fullness of life.
